The Radioprotective Effect of Growth Regulators on The Germination of Vegetable Seeds

Abstract
The present experiment was performed to investigate the radioprotective effect of Gibberellin IAA and 2.4-D on the germination of some r-ray irradiated vegetable seeds.
Three kinds of seeds, Lettuce (Black seeded simpson) hinese cabbage (chungbang), and Red pepper (2640) ere employed for this study.
Dosages of gamma-ray, 0, 500r, 2kr, 12kr and 24kr were given for 4 hours in the Co-60 (550ci) gammaay irradiation room of the Atomic Energy Research Institute.
Concentration of growth regulators, 100 ppm solution of gibberellic acid (GA), 50 ppm solution of IAA and 2.4-D were utilized.
For lettuce seeds, two different conditions, namely light and dark condition was made.
In lettuce seeds, protective effect was found in GA treatment at any dosage levels, but protective effect was pronounced in the plots of GA treatment after r-ray irradiation than those treated before irradiation
On the other hand, IAA and 2.4-D treatments did not show any protective effect and those chemicals gave damages to seeds serviving.
Radiosensitivity of Chinese cabbage in somewhat lower than the lettuce and red pepper. At the dosage of 24kr, treatment of IAA or 2.4-D increased the radation damage.
However, GA and IAA treatments demonstrated marked protective effect in red pepper seeds.
Red pepper seedy as well as lettuce seeds, the LD 50 dosage about 2kr.
Seeds which are treated with 2.4-D, root develop ment was inhibited no relation to r-ray dosages.
